¡CalabazaFest! is the colorful, cross-cultural, family-friendly, free, and ridiculously fun outdoor community event celebrating Day of the Dead, Halloween, and harvest fair traditions - and in 2019 it's celebrating its tenth anniversary! Held in Bushwick, Brooklyn's Maria Hernandez Park, ¡CalabazaFest! features a fantastic live stage show of music, mariachi, and dance performances, a farmers' market, healthy cooking demonstrations, hands-on pumpkin crafts, and a creative costume contest finale. Since its inception in 2010, ¡CalabazaFest! has grown to become a highly anticipated highlight of the Fall season in Bushwick, bringing together local community and arts organizations working in concert to create a joyous day celebrating community, diversity, and cultural expression. ¡CalabazaFest! Behind the Scenes RiseBoro Community Partnership, a multi-service nonprofit organization with over 40 years of service to the community, is proud to be producing ¡CalabazaFest! as part of its evolving approach to community wellness. Alvaro Paulino Jr., an internationally renowned, fifth-generation mariachi band leader (and Bushwick resident), serves as Music Director for ¡CalabazaFest!. Past performers have included his own Mariachi Tapatio de Alvaro Paulino, budding students from his New York City Mariachi Conservatory, mariachi star Ximena Roca, La Dinastia Eulogio, and Academia de Mariachi Nuevo Amanecer. Mazarte Dance Company, led by founder and director Martha Nora Zarate-Alvarez, has become an integral part of ¡CalabazaFest!, presenting thrilling performances in fabulous traditional costume. Local artist/designer Sean-Michael Fleming, creator of ¡CalabazaFest!, serves as creative director, lending his years of graphic, event, and theater design experience to the event.
